Liturgical Ministries
Lectors : Readers proclaim to the assembly the Word of God as found in the scripture readings of the Mass. This service is critical to the spiritual growth of our community. Readers are needed at all the Masses that take place in our Cathedral: Sundays, special feasts, and weekdays. To become a reader one must be a registered and active parishioner, participate in an orientation and ongoing training, and have the ability to read clearly and with understanding.
Eucharistic Ministers : Registered and active parishioners are needed as lay ministers who help with the orderly distribution of the Eucharist at most all Masses for Sundays and special feasts. The Eucharist is distributed under both forms of bread and wine at the 11am Sunday Mass and at other special times. Ministers are asked to participate in a training session.
Eucharistic Minister to the Homebound : Each Sunday ministers take Communion from the 9am Mass to the sick in their homes. Those who participate in this ministry need a caring spirit, a means of transportation, and a willingness to undergo training.
Ushers : The role of the ushers is to provide a welcoming and secure environment, take up the collection, see that the offertory gifts are brought to the altar, and assist with various situations that might arise.
Altar Servers : Boys and girls assist at the Masses for Sunday and special occasions. Catholic youth who have received their First Communion and are at least in the fourth grade are eligible. Those who assist at the Cathedral will sometimes have the opportunity to serve for the Archbishop. General training is provided. Training for the special Cathedral occasions is necessary.
Cathedral Choir : Our Cathedral has an excellent four section choir that from September through June practices on Thursday evenings and sings at the 11am Sunday Mass. It also is present for special Cathedral liturgies. The principal role of the choir is to lead the assembly in song. But at appropriate times its gift to the celebrating community is music meant only for listening.
Children’s Choir : Currently suspended, please check back at a later date.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word : At the 9am Sunday Mass approximately twenty children age four through fourth grade leave before the first reading to hear the lessons of the day’s scriptures explained in simple language. One or two instructors are needed each week. Written materials are available each week for the children to use or take home with them.
